Epic fantasy role playing games made in Japan. Stories generally involve crystals (in earlier games there were always the Crystals of Light and the party you travel with are the "Heroes of Light" etc.) but there is always some sort of secret undercurrent of heroism, overcoming great personal and mystical evils, and having ridiculous hair and swords. All good so far. Final fantasy's menu-and-turn-based-ish combat is suitably paced such that the endless and varied stream of battles feel more like engaging tactical encounters than a boring grind. Add to this the exceptionally pretty graphics (always at the forefront of the generation) and you've got a series that ranks as one of the best in the history of gaming.
